About the importance of saving relicts of cattle breeds and
varieties.
Statement by Marleen Felius on December 9th 2002 send to Hans NØrgaard
Yes, it is important to keep the Danish Island cattle alive.
Currently in many countries remaining populations are being protected or even bred back. Very, very
small populations are saved for genetic reasons only.
It is interesting to know that in the past 35 years (the period that I tried to collect information on cattle
breeds) the attitude in the (Western) world has changed completely. 35 years ago all official cattle
breeding associations, governments, research institutions, etc. made efforts to improve breeds, started to
make use of High Tec breeds (mainly Holstein) and show the world that they were modern. When asked
for information on specific old breeds the reply was that these were no longer there or soon to be gone.
As if they were ashamed of their native breeds. Now it is the opposite. Today officials recognise breeds
which were never recognised in the past. Institutions try to breed back breeds that have died out. Genetic
variety has become the issue.
Take France for instance. 25 years ago breeds like the Corse, from Corsica, as well as the Pyrenean
Lourdaise, Bearnaise and Casta as well as many others were considered no longer existing. Today these
are fully recognised again. The Bordelaise is bred back, the Saosnoise and Bleue de Bazougers from
northern France were recognised, while they never even existed as real breeds. Currently all of these -
and several more - have their own breeding associations and they are supported by the French
government.
In the Netherlands the Burned Red (Brandrood) was recognised last year. It was never a breed, but a
special deep red coloured type within the Meuse-Rhine-Issel (MRIJ). Most MRIJ breeders modernised
their cattle since the 1950s with the use of some, mainly white coloured, 'milky' bulls. Thus the old dark
coloured type which were more beefy in type slowly vanished without being noticed by the herdbook.
Few old farmers kept them, one lady started to gather them and now they are flourishing again, favoured

for heather regions which have to be grazed.
In Great Britain, the country where they became aware of their heritage sooner then in any other
European country, the Gloucester was saved just in time, and the Vaynol was recognised, although of the
last only one herd existed. In Germany animals resembling the Miesbacher were recently gathered to
breed back.
The same is currently happening in Italy, Spain, Portugal. Efforts are made in Greece to save the last
Steppe type and Illyrian shorthorn type cattle, as well as is now done in some (poor) East-European
countries. In the USA remnants are protected, like the Lineback and Randall Blue. The different herds of
Pineywoods and Florida Scrub cattle were inventoried, are monitored and protected. In some
South-American countries protective measures are taken for remnants of Criollo cattle. There are many
more examples to be given.
Most remnants are saved Not for their economical importance, although in some cases they are of
economical value. They may have traits which modern, high producing breed have lost. Like being very
well adapted to their 'natural' environment and thus producing milk and/or meat without much costs for
housing, fodder or veterinary care, living on very poor soil, withstanding harsh (weather) conditions, can
walk great distances, swim or climb, being very fertile, having no calving difficulties, etc. etc., you know
what I mean.
So, when in so many countries remaining populations of none improved cattle, sometimes not even real
breeds, are currently being saved, I don't see why there is any reason to not save the Danish Island cattle.

M. Felius: "Cattle Breeds - an encyclopedia" 1995
Marleen Felius was born in 1948 in Rotterdam, in the Netherlands.
Marleen was educated at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rotterdam and works as a professional artist and
illustrator since 1970. Cattle are the main subject of her work. For over a period of 25 years she has
collected information on cattle breeds from all over the world. In course of time she has designed a
classification for cattle breeds in which both the current breeds as well as those which are extinct are
collected, described and pictured. She is also a lecturer at the Eindhoven academy for Industrial
Design.
Marleen Felius uses watercolours to create isomorphous images with cows and bulls all portrayed to
scale and from the same angle so that the differences between the breeds can be clearly identified.
In this book Marleen Felius provides an overview of approximately
700 cattle breeds throughout the world in words and images: "This book has been realized because of
my love of cattle and my amazement at the existence of such a great variety of different breeds
throughout the world".
